Roof Vent Installation Instructions

Applicable for Roof Vents
Installation of roof vents must comply with all local standards and regulations. Before beginning a job, determine how much ventilation is required.

New Installation
1. Install the roof vents on the rear of the house evenly spaced on the roof.
2. Mark the location of all roof vents before cutting holes.
3. Centre the holes between the rafters within two feet from the peak of the roof.
4. Mark a outline for the hole on the roof, no larger than the hole in the bottom of the vent.

New Construction or Re-Roofing
1. For new construction or re-roofing, cut the holes in the sheathing before applying shingles.
2. Shingle up until the first full course of shingles covers the bottom of the hole.
3. Cut the excess shingles away and install the roof vent using the predrilled nail holes.
4. The top of the roof vent has a moulded-in peak. Ensure that the vent is installed in the proper orientation.
5. Do not use roofing tar to seal the vent to the roof. The wide flange and moulded-in water guards will force the water down the roof over the shingles.
6. Use of roofing tar will void any warranty on Roof Vents.
7. Continue installing shingles, overlapping the flange on the vent.
8. Cut the shingles around the top of the vent to match its shape.

Adding Ventilation to Finished Roofs
1. Determine how much additional ventilation is required and the best location for the holes.
2. Inspect the attic to determine the location of rafters and any other obstructions.
3. Mark the holes in the appropriate hole locations on the top of the shingles.
4. Using a sharp knife, cutaway the shingles.
5. Drill a pilot hole and cut through the sheathing using a keyhole saw or electric reciprocating saw.
6. Inspect the hole for size and location and compensate if necessary. If the hole must be modified, ensure that any change will not enlarge the hole beyond the maximum recommended size.
7. Carefully remove the roofing nails within three inches of the hole.
8. Cut the shingles at the top of the hole to accommodate the molded peak of the roof vent.
9. Slide the vent into place beneath the shingles ensuring that the throat of the vent is centered on the hole.
10. Nail the vent into place using the predrilled holes.
11. Replace nails in the shingles as necessary to ensure a proper seal.
